He became a seminal figure in modern Kannada theatre, founding the celebrated Bengaluru theatre troupe Benaka and directing numerous acclaimed plays. He entered cinema during the parallel film movement of the 1970s, working as an assistant and associate director under masters like B. V. Karanth on landmark films including *Chomana Dudi* (1975) and *Thabbaliyu Neenade Magane* (1977). He made his independent directorial debut with *Grahana* (1978), which won the Nargis Dutt Award for Best Feature Film on National Integration and the National Film Award for Best Screenplay, alongside the Karnataka State Film Award for First Best Film. Over the decades, Nagabharana became one of the most decorated filmmakers in Karnataka, helming influential literary adaptations and culturally rooted social dramas. His works have repeatedly received national and international acclaim, earning 9 National Film Awards and 14 Karnataka State Film Awards. Several of his cinematic narratives also served as key creative inspirations for prominent Hindi films. Beyond directing, he is an accomplished character actor on screen, having made his early acting appearances in classics like *Ondanondu Kaladalli* (1978) and Shankar Nag's *Accident* (1984). In modern mainstream cinema, he has played authoritative and elder statesmen roles, most notably appearing as the senior television news editor Srinivas in the blockbuster pan-Indian films *K.G.F: Chapter 1* (2018) and *K.G.F: Chapter 2* (2022), as well as in *Tatsama Tadbhava* (2023).
